Backing/Young horse development
At The Link Equestrian, our backing process is designed to be gradual and stress-free, ensuring each horse progresses at a comfortable pace. We begin with essential groundwork, including Parrelli and M.Roberts techniques, to establish trust and communication. The second stage involves introducing tack, long-reining, and small amounts of lungeing, allowing the horse to become familiar with new sensations and commands. Next, we gently introduce the horse to movement and weight through flapping around and leaning over, ensuring they are relaxed at each step. Once the horse is confident, we move to sitting astride and gradually build up to walking solo under saddle. The final stage focuses on refining aids for all transitions, ensuring the horse understands and responds correctly, during this stage, we also transfer the education previously learnt through groundwork. To enhance their experience, we take the horse out and about as much as possible, providing varied environments and challenges. Our approach always considers the horse's age, strength, and the owner’s requirements and views. Additionally, we offer young horse schooling, which includes introductions to arena hires, outings, jumps, and low-level competitions, fostering well-rounded and confident horses.
Behavioural Issues
At The Link Equestrian, our problem horse service is tailored to address a wide range of behavioral issues, including rearing, bucking, bolting, spinning, refusing, napping, not loading, spookiness, and lack of confidence. Our first step is to identify the underlying cause of the behavior, whether it stems from fear, changes in management, trauma, pain or pain memory, or even mild discomfort. Understanding these factors is crucial to our training process. We adapt our techniques to suit the specific problem and the individual horse, ensuring a compassionate and effective approach. If we suspect that a horse is experiencing pain at any point, we immediately halt training and consult with the owner and relevant professionals to address the issue. Our goal is to create a safe and supportive environment where horses can overcome their challenges and develop into well-adjusted, confident partners.
